We are able to offer a soil sampling service. This gives us a better idea of how to help you with fertiliser and grass seed advice. In order to obtain a self-sampling kit, please telephone Olga on 01622 718062.
Once you have received the kit, please take five samples in a “W” formation from each field, i.e. a handful of soil from each point of the W. Please place these in the bag provided, shake it to mix the soils and write your name, the address, the name of the field , the current crop and the proposed crop on the bag. The bag or bags should then be put in the addressed envelope and returned to us. As soon as we receive the results, we will let you know.
It is important to understand that the results from any soil analysis are only as good as the samples submitted. For this reason it is essential that a formal sampling procedure is adopted if accurate meaningful results are to be produced.
Soil sampling procedures used should aim to ensure that any samples taken are representative of the whole area to be tested. Ensure soil samples are taken from a uniformly managed area. Avoid taking samples from areas near gates, fences, drinking troughs or the headland. Do not
mix samples from separate areas that have different soil types, previous crop history, slopes, drainage or persistent poor yields.
Generally soil tests should be taken on all fields at least once every 2-4 years but soil on which vegetables or other high cash crops are grown may need to be tested annually. A popular time to take a soil sample is after harvest, when fields are accessible and good representative samples can
be taken.
Using a suitable auger (conical, screw or cheese core type) or trowel take 20-25 individual cores selected systematically and evenly across the area or field. Do not include roots, plant material and accumulation surface organic matter. Mix the cores or slices together in a clean plastic container or bag.
Tests should be done by following an imaginary ‘W’ or ‘M’ shape in the field and taking samples at regular points.
Sampling depth – Grassland 4” (10cm) Arable 6” (15cm). Apply for each crop. Let us help you to use your fertiliser more efficiently.
