Group 1

Solstice:

  • Mainstay variety for both millers and growers.
  • Medium to strong tillering.
  • Relatively weak straw.
  • Sometimes prone to mildew or brown rust.
  • Not ideal as a 2nd wheat unless on a high input fertile site.

Gallant:

  • Very high yielding.
  • Early Maturing
  • Good Hagberg & Specific weight.
  • Short Straw.
  • Performs best on fertile sights.

Group 2

Einstein:

  • Very good 2nd wheat.
  • Prefers low fertility sites.
  • Robust disease profile.

Cordiale:

  • Good 1st or 2nd wheat.
  • Early Maturing.
  • High Hagberg and Specific weight.
  • Short stiff straw.
  • Good premium potential with millers.

Panorama:

  • Relatively new variety.
  • Good 2nd wheat.
  • Excellent resistance to yellow rust.
  • Stronger tillering than Cordiale or Einstein.
  • Better grain quality than Einstein.

Group 3

Claire

  • A good consistent variety.
  • Accepted by both UK and European millers.
  • Only early driller in group 3.

Scout

  • Soft milling wheat.
  • Excellent quality, particularly Specific weight.
  • Long straw but with excellent resistance to lodging.
  • Slow autumn development.
  • High resistance to both yellow and brown rust.

Zebedee:

  • Performs well on heavy land.
  • Requires accurate seed rates.
  • Higher yielding than scout.

Group 4

Alchemy:

  • A good variety for the South West
  • High yields.
  • Susceptible to brown rust.
  • Good resistance to Septoria Tritici

Grafton:

  • Good 2nd wheat.
  • Relatively early mature
  • Good Specific weight.
  • Short stiff straw.

Oakley:

  • Good on both light and heavy soils.
  • Hard endosperm feeder.
  • Good disease resistance except for Fusarium.
  • Tallish but stiff straw.

JB Diego:

  • Hard feed variety.
  • High yielding
  • Suits most soils.
  • Good grain quality
  • Tallish straw.
  • Good disease profile.

Barley:

Carat:

  • Competitive yielder.
  • BYMV resistance.
  • Excellent Specific weight.
  • Stiff short straw.

Saffron:

  • Very high yields.
  • Good disease rating except for mildew.
  • Taller straw than some varieties but stiff.
  • Leading feed variety.

Sequel:

  • Established six row variety.
  • Agronomically sound.
  • Does not yield as well as some two row varieties.

Pearl:

  • Late maturity.
  • Low yielding
  • Maltsters favoured winter barley.

Cassata:

  • Approved by the Institute of Brewers and Distillers.
  • Good disease spectrum.
  • BYMV Resistance.
  • Good straw profile.
  • Good malting variety.

Oats:

Gerald:

  • Very popular with millers.
  • Good straw profile.
  • Good disease profile.

Mascani:

  • Excellent grain characteristics.
  • Good yield.
  • Crown Rust resistance
  • Good straw strength.

SW Dalguise:

  • High Yielder
  • Tall straw.
  • Accepted by millers.
